29th November 2007 - Young Chef Competition
The Rotary Club of Spalding held it's annual Young Chef competition at Spalding High School. This event is organised by our Youth Committee.
There were twelve competitors from three local schools (Spalding High School, Robert Manning School and The Gleed Girls School). Our thanks go to the judges who gave freely of their time and to Spalding High School for hosting this event.
  
Coming Events
Sportsman's Dinner - Thursday 12th June 2008 - 7.30 pm for 8.00 pm at The South Holland Centre, Market Place, Spalding. An evening for both Ladies and Gentlemen. This year we are pleased to welcome Peter McGovern,Golf Pro at The Belfry and Mike Cowan who opened the bowling for Yorks with Freddie Truman. Dress is formal (black tie) and tickets are £35 each. 20th March 2008 - The Rotary Club of Spalding will help provide transport for the Inner Wheel Concert for the blind.
4th March 2008 - The Rotary Club of Spalding Age Concern Concert to be held at The South Holland Centre with Rtn. Martin Lishman acting as MC.
26th April 2008 Rotary Stroke Awareness Day. The Rotary Club of Spalding will assist the Rotary Club of South Holland in helping to raise awareness of stroke and related conditions.
6th July 2008 - The Rotary Club of Spalding Gateway Sports Day for disabled competitors, organised by our Community Service Committee and to be held at The Castle Sports Complex, Spalding.
Last year the weather was good and the 100+ athletes competed keenly for the medals. We look forward to another exciting afternoon of competitive action and fun. We take this opportunity to thank all the individuals and businesses who help us stage this event through their generous donations. |

18th December 2006 - Christmas Party The Rotary Club of Spalding held its annual Christmas Party at The Bull Inn, Pinchbeck. A strong turnout of members, wives, partners and widows of past members resulted in an enjoyable evening accompanied by an excellent meal prepared and served by The Bull Inn.
After the meal, The Rev. Moon from Moulton gave a Christmas message, Rtn Rodney Britten led us in the singing of some Christmas songs and Carols, and The Club members presented President Alan Porter with a framed cricket cartoon, signed by all members of the club.

21st November 2006 - Youth Speaks Competition The Rotary Club of Spalding held it's annual Youth Speaks competition in the debating chamber of South Holland District Council.
This is a public speaking event, organised by our Youth Committee, in which teams of three school pupils compete against each other. An intermediate competition and a senior competition are run back to back on the same evening.
In this years competition, both the intermediate and senior competitions were won by teams representing Bourne Grammar School. These teams now progress to the District competitions. Our thanks go to the competition judges and to South Holland District Council for generously allowing us to host this event in their debating chamber.

4th November 2006 - Firework Party It is traditional within our Rotary Club that during his year in office our club President puts on a special event for Club members. In celebration of his year in office President Alan Porter chose to hold a firework party at his house.
The party was attended by club members, partners and children. The weather was perfect for setting of the many fireworks and Alan and Angela provided some delicious food & drink before, during and after the firework display.
Well, we all know what fireworks look like don't we, but surely if we take a photo we can put it on the website!

Gateway Sports Day The Gateway sports day took place at the Castle Sports Complex between Spalding, Boston, Bourne, Garth School and Hovedon House with approximately 80 people taking part.
Arthur Simmonds of Nene Valley and Harriers Athletic Club did all the organising of the events.
Boston were the overall team winners. Below are a few pictures of the day.
  
Tuesday 7th March saw our Concert for Age Concern at the South Holland Centre. Master of Ceremonies, Martin Lishman.
A variety of performances provided free from local artists in song, dance and music to entertain a full house. A most enjoyable evening was had by all.
A special thanks to Rotarian Martin Lishman for his organising of the evening, thank you to all the artistes who took part and gave their free time and to all at the South Holland Centre.
We look forward to our next opportunity to provide another evening of the same. Our 69th Charter Night Dinner takes place on Friday 3rd March at the South Holland Centre in Spalding. After the meal and toasts, the evening will conclude with entertainment provided by John Kirkpatrick, a noted button accordion player and singer. The invitation is extended to Rotarians, wives, partners, guests and friends!
The Gentleman's Speaker dinner is one of the highlights of our year and as usual was a memorable occasion with good food, superb speaker and a £1000 donated from the takings to Ovacome, the ovarian cancer support group in memory of Paula. Spalding Rotary also bought two shelter boxes as stocks have been depleted by the Pakistan earthquake relief effort.
The Garth school young enterprise company has recently been helped get off the ground by Rotarians Martin Lishman and John Lister, who have been helping the Priory school for several years.

Young chefs from around south lincolnshire competed in the first round of a high pressure national cookery competition. The young Chef competition organised by Martin was a great success. A lot of thought was put into the event by the competitors and it was fascinating to watch the meals taking shape. The judges had a difficult job choosing a winner. |

This year has seen Spalding Rotary promoting and sponsoring various events. Here are just some of the projects the Club has supported.
Gateway Sports Competition – An annual competition between Gateway Clubs for the Disabled in our area. The competition is organised by the Community Service Committee of the Rotary Club of Spalding with all members of the Club helping out on the day. Sponsorship is provided by the Club and by corporate sponsors.
Recently the Rotary Club of Spalding agreed to provide further financial assistance to enable the setting up of a Sports Club especially for disabled people in our area.
Age Concern Concert – This is an annual concert which provides an evening of free entertainment to a South Holland Centre packed full of local people.
Aqua Boxes – Organised by the International Committee, the Club purchases these special boxes which make virtually any supply of water safe to drink. Clean water is critical in disaster relief operations. Rotary Clubs maintain a stock of Aqua Boxes ready to be shipped all over the world when disaster strikes.
Young Cook Competition – This is an annual competition run in local schools to find the best young cook. The winner goes forward to represent Spalding at a regional competition. The competition is organised by the Club and is sponsored by local companies. Geest have been especially supportive of this event.
Youth Speaks – Another annual competition for young people run in cooperation with local schools. Teams of three compete from local schools. Winners go forward to further heats with the ultimate goal of winning the national finals. The standard of debate is very high which provides a real challenge for those taking part.
Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) – This is a residential leadership development course run at an outdoor centre with a national reputation for excellence. Every year the Rotary Club of Spalding sponsors a local young person to attend this proven programme.
Work preparation: Mock Interviews – Members of the Rotary Club of Spalding visit local schools and provide young people with interview practice. For many it is their first interview with someone from the world of industry and commerce. Feedback is provided to each interviewee.
Calvert Trust – The Rotary Club of Spalding sponsors a local person each year to attend this wonderful centre. The Calvert Trust is an outward bound residential training centre specially equipped for dealing with people with disabilities. Tuesday 12th June Joint Rotary Clubs Centenary Project with Ayscoughfee
Members of our club and the South Holland Rotary Club were invited to a reception at Ayscoughfee Hall, there was a short talk on the renovation and plans for the hall and the official opening of the Rotary funded area. |
